Future Coasts Aotearoa is an immersive simulation game developed to explore how people respond to sea-level rise and other coastal climate impacts. Set in a New Zealand coastal town, the game places players in the role of locals facing increased flooding, storm surges, and groundwater intrusion due to climate change.
Played in workshops across the country, the game acts as a powerful conversation starter. Participants must weigh up risks, values, and resources while navigating unpredictable climate events. With every decision, they help scientists gather behavioural data to inform real-world adaptation planning.
Designed for ages 16 and up, the game can be played solo or in groups. It builds on the success of My Coastal Futures and Township Flood Challenge, extending NIWA’s series of serious games for climate engagement and research.
