Captain Green Australia
Challenge
Kids love their devices, but that often means less time outdoors. Parks, reserves, and bushland areas across Australia struggle to compete with the pull of screens, even though parents know fresh air, movement, and adventure are what children need most. The challenge is how to make the outdoors feel exciting and fun for modern families.
Solution
Captain Green Australia is currently in development by Geo AR Games, building on the success of proven scavenger hunt experiences such as Scout About, Kāpene-Kākāriki and the original Captain Green. The game reuses well-tested mechanics and is refreshed with new artwork, animations, and a brand-new storyline designed specifically for Australian landscapes.
Children meet an explorer from the future whose airship has been damaged in a powerful storm. To repair it, families explore local trails, scanning QR codes to locate missing parts. Each scan unlocks an animation, advances the story, and reveals facts about Australian plants, animals, and ecosystems, from bushland and wetlands to coastal reserves.
It works on most devices and, once downloaded, does not require mobile data or Wi-Fi.
Positive Impact
Captain Green Australia encourages children and their families to explore, and notice the natural world around them. The unfolding adventure keeps players moving, following a digital teasure hunt that sparks curiosity about Australia’s unique wildlife.
For councils, parks, and communities, the recycled app model makes it a cost-effective way to offer a fresh, family-friendly attraction that can be adapted and reused across multiple sites. And for families, it transforms screen time into outdoor time.
